Tightly Woven Hair Jewelry
Small Hoop Earring, 1845-60 (01.383)
Large Hoop Earring, 1845-65 (01.384)
Both of these earrings do not have a match in the collection, but they are valuable as solitary objects because they illustrate how hair could fit into a pre-made jewelry form. The hair would be tightly woven and stiffened with gum before filling the earring shapes; these earrings are relatively inexpensive types of hair jewelry because they consist of little gold and no ornamentation.
