Historic Northamptoneceives Massachusetts Foundation for Humanities Grant The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities has awarded Historic Northampton a planning grant to produce a public program exploring issues raised in the recently published book: Love Across the Color Line: The Letters of Alice Hanley to Channing Lewis (see review in this issue). Researcher and writer Paul Gaffney, a graduate student in History at the University of Massachusetts, will develop a program titled "But oh my how lonesome": Love Across the Color Line in Turn of the Century New England, that will examine Irish, working-class Northampton and the African-American community of Springfield at the turn of the century. Using narrative and storytelling techniques, this program will draw upon the scholarly interpretation of an event in local history to examine the process of historical discovery and the lives and times that it illuminates.
