Historic Northampton Hosts School-to-Work Conference

More than 100 representatives from the business, education, arts and cultural communities gathered at the Northampton Center for the Arts on February 6th for an Arts/Communications/Humanities Career Pathway planning conference.

The meeting was an effort to improve both the education and career preparation of young people by incorporating "real life" experiences into their schooling. Specific activities include infusing local workplace examples into academic coursework, developing career awareness curriculum, and offering community based experiences such as job-shadowing and internships.

The conference also addressed ways in which to introduce arts and humanities related experiences into career pathway educational approaches. Career pathways use student interests in broad subject areas as a context for learning and applying academics and as a vehicle for career and post secondary planning.

The planning group for this conference included Historic Northampton, Hampshire County School-to-Career Partnership, Communities and Schools for Career Success, Enchanted Circle Theater and the Northampton Center for the Arts. The program was supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
