Northampton's historical commission recognized Historic Northampton along with eight other city properties at its 25th annual Preservation Awards on May 16th. Held by the Northampton Historical Commission since 1975, the event honors property owners for improvements that enhance the city's historic architecture. The award is given in four categories, including new construction, restoration, renovation and creative uses.
Receiving the award (above) is Stanley Elkins, Board President and Edythe Ambroz, contractor, of Structures by Design. Tris Metcalfe (not shown) is project architect.
Historic Northampton was recognized for the renovation of its four historic buildings and grounds during a year-long restoration project. The buildings were restored to their original colors based upon a detailed study by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. Architectural details such as a roof balustrade on the 1813 Damon house and period fencing were reconstructed based on early photographs. These buildings, all located on their original sites, comprise a collection of architectural history from the early Colonial era to the Federal period.
