Massachusetts Cultural Council Grants Organizational Support Funds

The Massachusetts Cultural Council has awarded Historic Northampton a matching grant of $3200 through MCC's Organizational Support program. Historic Northampton is one of more than 400 cultural organizations that successfully compete for grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. The MCC is a state agency with a fiscal year 2000 budget of $18.3 million appropriated by the Governor and Legislature.

State grants are awarded through a competitive process. This grant signifies that Historic Northampton provides a high level of quality in its programs, community service and administrative ability.

The council's review panel singled out aspects of Historic Northampton's program for special merit. "In the panel's view," the report noted, "the new exhibition space is excellent. The collection storage is exemplary. There is evidence of good planning and research. The student-led research projects are impressive. The Sojourner Truth project is superb. The printed materials are of high quality, and there is a solid understanding of curriculum needs."

The mission of the MCC is to promote excellence, education, access, and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences. The nonprofit cultural industry has a $2.56 billion economic impact in the state.
