Weathervane Newsletter Fall 2001
Annual Appeal 2001 This year, Northampton was designated as among the top 12 distinctive destinations by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Our work at Historic Northampton is part of the cultural infrastructure that is one of the major economic assets of our community.
During the past year, Historic Northampton's exhibits and programs have received national attention. Visitors from all over the world have toured our museum and historic houses. Our new website has attracted over half a million viewers and researchers. Award winning books, including Pulitzer Prize recipient Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's Age of Homespun, have featured our collections.
We are equally proud of our community service. We have held workshops for teachers and we have received grants for curriculum development. We have provided special study programs for Northampton High School students and internships for Five College graduate and undergraduate students. We have hosted classes for Learning in Retirement.
We have developed new partnerships. We are pleased to welcome the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities to Historic Northampton where their main offices will share the Shepherd House.
As we preserve and promote our impressive historical and cultural legacy we are investing heavily in our future- a future that will place increasing demands on our resources. As we increase our commitment to the future, we are looking for increased levels of support from our constituencies.
We depend upon our Annual Appeal for a significant portion of our operating expenses.
Investing in our cultural heritage makes sense for insuring the kind of long-term growth and quality of life that we want for our region. Historic Northampton is part of a network of cultural organizations that serve our communities and stimulate regional tourism. Above all, we seek to enhance the capacity, for those who live in and visit this region, to access the depth and variety of our rich history which is our common heritage.
Your gift is crucial to our mission. We hope you will respond generously.
