New Visions: The Art of Historic Preservation

The Northampton Historical Commission presents New Visions: The Art of Historic Preservation a photo exhibit by renown local photographer, Stan Sherer, that documents the most significant historic preservation projects undertaken in Northampton during the past 25 years. Contemporary pictures taken in the spring of 2001 are matched with early photos from the collection of Historic Northampton. The images will be on display at Historic Northampton from October 20 to November 24th.

The Historical Commission's role is to preserve, protect and promote the cultural assets of the city. To that end, annual Preservation Awards have been given since 1975, a period when significant restoration and rehabilitation was completed on major residential and commercial properties in all city neighborhoods.

Showcasing the fifteen best of these projects, the Commission hopes, will remind everyone of the importance of saving our architectural heritage. "We hope to inspire future generations of restorers" said Louise Bloomberq, Commission member and project coordinator. The photographer, Stan Sherer and Tris Metcalfe, an architect on the Historical Commission, will do several presentations in the schools in connection with the exhibit, and the images will have a permanent home in City Hall.

The project has been funded by the Arts Lottery Program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, as administered by the Northampton Arts Council, Florence Savings Bank, and the City of Northampton.
