Community Planning in U.S. History is Focus of Summer Teachers' Institute

Historic Northampton hosted a group of 25 Hampshire County teachers in July as part of a Department of Education funded workshop on community planning in U.S. history. Organized by Smith College Campus School teacher Tom Weiner and community planner Joel Russell, the institute was designed to instruct teachers in the rudiments of community planning through an examination of the history of planned communities, the effects of planned and unplanned developments and the process of successful planning in a contemporary setting.

At Historic Northampton, teachers received an overview of town development based on archival prints, photographs, paintings and early maps. Northampton City Planner Wayne Feiden then led the group on a walking tour of Northampton sites currently the focus of planning efforts. The institute also included a number of site visits including the National Historic Park in Lowell and the Churchill neighborhood of Holyoke.

The institute was sponsored by the Office of Professional Development of the Hampshire Educational Collaborative.
