Lover's Knot Brooch with Acorn Drops, c. 1850's-60's (71.174)

This brooch is one of several in the collection that are designed in a lover's knot motif. The tubular pieces of netted hair are loosely woven around a tube shape and stiffened before the tube is removed. The central gold decoration looks like a small ribbon with foliage or wave-like details and is punctuated by two acorn drops. Several lovers' knot hair brooches in the collection are composed of two different hair colors; this brooch was most probably sentimental jewelry between lovers and not memorial jewelry.
