Marcy Clark, d. 1798

Marcy Clark, d. 1798

Mrs. Marcy Clark In Memory of Mrs. Marcy Clark wife of Mr. Enoch Clark who died Aug. 4th 1798 in the 60th year of her age. This gravestone has a very clean-cut cherub and lettering. The cherub is very naturalistic, but undetailed and in low relief. It has a crown of leaves, a cross between the foliate designs and the crown of righteousness, and represents mortality and rebirth. Below the cherub are abstracted organic designs of circles. One circle with lines inside of it may represent the sun, symbolizing the true light of God within the soul, as well as death and resurrection. The other designs on the strip are common with the first graves to have decoration, and can be characterized as folk art designs, rather than a trend in grave art.
