Elizabeth Lyman, d. 1762
Mrs. Elizabeth Lyman Daughter of Mr. Elias and Mrs. Hannah Lyman was born Sept. 29th 1744 and Died June 5th 1762. This stone is very much like that of Mr. Joseph Lyman, and was done only a year afterwards. This too, is most likely the work of Joseph Williston of Springfield. This stone however is shorter. It too is made of smooth close grained red sandstone and is in high relief. The wings of the cherub are almost identical to Joseph Lyman's, with the organic curls. There is also the boarder of foliage along the base. The cherub's face seems to float in the space, and the face is very clean cut and neturalistic, with pupils and raised eyebrows. The face retains a skull-like quality, and wears a crown of rightousness. |
