James Lyman, d. 1769

James Lyman, d. 1769

Captain James Lyman Sacred to the Memory of Cap. JAMES LYMAN who Died Sep. 35 AD 1769 in the 79th Year of his Age. This gravestone is an example of the classical revival in gravestone art. It is highly ornate with richly carved details of foliate. The epitaph is on a round plate surrounded by growing vines and flowers intertwined. There are three cherubs, each with identical faces of different sizes and vines coming out of the mouths, suggesting creation. Each of the cherubs wears a different crown of righteousness. This may be an example of Nathaniel Phelps's stone cutting work. He was very popular for his ornate and detailed neoclassical stones, the cherubs with their socketless eyes, and for his lettering.
