Phebe Pomeroy, d. 1776

Phebe Pomeroy, d. 1776

Phebe Pomeroy In Memory of Mrs. PHEBE POMEROY, the wife of Mr. Quartus Pomeroy who died May 30th Anno Dom 1776 in the 41st year of her age. "The Parent kind, whose bounty caused the poor to smile, the obliging neighbor, faithful friend, leaves here her dust to sleep a while in peace, she liv'd in peace, she dy'd and rests in hope to live again, when Christ her Lord, comes glorify'd to raise his saints, with him to reign". The shape and style of this stone classify it as Renaissance style, which is not common outside Boston. The cherub seems out of place with the deeply cut organic designs above and below it. The wings of the cherub are very detailed. The face has very small eyes, a large nose in relief and a line to indicate the mouth. Above the face are a series of swirls, which fit into the round top of the grave. These swirls could be a halo, or a crown of righteousness, or symbolize heaven. Below the form the swirls most likely are supposed to be foliate designs. There is also hatching carved into the stone, which may have been used to put the forms into higher relief.
