Enoch Southwell, d. 1778

Enoch Southwell, d. 1778

Mr. Enoch Southwell In Memory of Mr. ENOCH SOUTHWELL who Died June 29th 1778. In the 78th Year of his Age. The theme of this stone seems to be growing plants. There are plants at the bottom of the stone, seeming to be growing from the earth, and plants besides the cherub. The plants on the bottom are meant to be growing from the body of the deceased, thereby showing life from death, and resurrection. That idea is repeated on the top of the stone, with a growing form-either a tree of life or a palm of victory, both symbols of the resurrection. On the angel there appears to be something growing. Even above the angel, taking the place of a crown of righteousness is a plant-like form that represents the resurrection of Christ in heaven. The form of the stone is wider and squatter than most of the period.
