Fanny Tileston, d. 1795

Fanny Tileston, d. 1795

Miss Fanny Tileston, 1775-1795 This stone is interesting because it represents the third type of design used on stones of the 18th century: the willow and urn. The transition went from winged death's head to cherub to willow and urn in the 1790's. This is a transition design because it has a cherub. It also shows the trend of neoclassical design on gravestones with the columns on either side, reminding the viewer of a classical temple. It is also very geometric. Above the columns are willow forms. Next to the willow are forms that can be interpreted as pillars with capitals or urns, or trees. The cherub sits on a round form, like a classical dome. On the torso of the cherub in a bowl, which may be an urn symbolizing an offering. The cherub is in high relief and very detailed with eyes with pupils, a nose with nostrils, and hair.
