Edwards Church, Northampton, Massachusetts

Edwards Church

The present Edwards Church, with its broad clear lines and somewhat Scandinavian flavor, was erected in 1958.

The Edwards Church of 1872 was as Victorian as were contemporary houses. The spire was covered with multi-colored slates in a bold pattern and the detailing of the walls and eaves was of medieval European inspiration as were the window forms. In a sense the building could be called eclectic; that is, the result of picking and chosing among elements from various architectural periods and assembling them in a building of no recognizably traditional style. This typically American process can be seen to a greater or lesser degree in almost all Victorian buildings.
