Historic Northampton

Collections

Fine Art Collection

Approximately 1300 paintings, drawings, and prints form the museum's original art collection. Included in this group are works by Ralph Earl, Winthrop Chandler, James Wells Champney, Sarah Goodrich, and the largest publicly held- collection of works by 19th century local artist Charles Burleigh, Jr. The art of Bessie and Susanne Lathrop, local sisters who in the 19th century made their living as artists, is also represented in Historic Northampton's collection. In addition to paintings and prints of local people and local scenes, many of these artworks have important local histories, such as the school girl drawings of Jane Damon (Smith) and Susan L. B. Munroe (Shepherd) who attended the Gothic Seminary in Northampton in the 1830s-40s.
